India
is the land of ancient history and the cradle of many bygone civilizations. This is also the birth place of
Hinduism, Jainism, Buddhism, Sikhism and hosts of tribal religions. India - an
amazing Kalidoscope of cultures
, costumes, colures and flavours….with
rich anthropological and geographical heritage.. At present most Indian
cities are on the fast track of industrialization and modernization. From
salt to satellites are manufactured here ... ranking India 10th amongst the
industrialized nations of the world ……. owns a national space research
agency…… nuclear power plants …… a booming computer
industry….. about 190 universities … and has the largest pools
of educated labors force on earth………India is one of the
fastest emerging global market, for almost all kinds of businesses,
manufacturing services and trade houses, from all over the world….the
corporate giants and the multinationals are all here ….making India
prominent amongst the developing countries in west Asia. To support all
these, India
is the largest democratic nation of the millennium with an exploding
population of over one billion people .. but all this does not complete the picture.
India is a land of
extreme contrasts and rapid changes. over 400,000
children die each year from starvation and malnourishment
alone….another 300,000 children are said to be in bonded labours. there are over 4.5
million lepers ….400,000 prostitutes ….15 million hvi infected people …… 2 million new TB
cases are detected every year. about 74% of its
populations still live in rural poverty , scattered in to 600,000 villages
and tribal hamlets. they are dependent on
traditional farming and the lean live-stocks for their mere survival. This
crippled economy is often shattered by excess rain, extreme drought and
sudden disasters.
As a result of this large influx of unskilled and illustrate rural
populations of lower income standards , mass migrate into the urban centers,
where the civic authorities are unprepared and the public funds are
unavailable for creating new houses and more jobs. Out of desperation and
struggle to survive , these poor people resort to erecting make shift
shanties in the public lands and side walks , giving birth to numerous
slums with out any reference to running water, electricity, sanitation and
other minimum standards of decent living. Wave after wave arrive. The new comers determined to be put up with all
kinds of inconveniences and dangers in anticipation of achieving success
and prosperity in the new urban environments . as often as the civic authorities demolish their
shanties , almost immediately they spring up again. These numerous slums
and shanties are the by product of our rural poverty and urban prosperity
and we made it !!!!.
The
general pattern of the development of these slums are
almost the same every time. soon 50% of the Indian
population will be found existing in her major metros , filling these concrete
jungles with incredible shanties and slums.
